Using the Holden Village Audio Archive

Welcome to the Holden Village Audio Archive. The following hints, suggestions and answers to common questions may prove helpful as you use the archive.

  • What is this archive?

The Holden Village Audio Archive is a resource for the Holden community and the world. Since the 1960s, thousands of hours of sessions, lectures and discussions have been recorded at Holden Village, many contributed by artists, academics and others of national renown.

  • Is the archive free to use?

Yes, the archive is free for non-commercial use, but all use is subject to the Archive Terms of Service, including all license conditions.

  • Finding recordings in the archive.

There are three main tools which will help you locate recordings in the archive. The first two are accessible from the menu to your left. Clicking on "Recordings by Presenter" produces a paged list of all contributors in the collection. You can also browse by year by clicking on any year in the "Recordings by Year" menu. The search menu is a general tool for finding any presenter or recording. The search tool works best by entering the name of presenter or any portion of the title of the presentation.

  • What if I don't find what I'm looking for?

The archive currently contains only a portion of Holden's audio holdings. We are the process of digitizing more and more of the collection. If you have a particular recording or subject that you would like to see on this website, please contact us at audioarchive@holdenvillage.org.

  • Why are there no recordings for a given year?

We regret that we have no recordings for 2007. If you have copies of recordings for 2007 please let us know and we will add them to the archive. Please contact us at audioarchive@holdenvillage.org.

  • What does "early year" mean?

We have recordings from Holden's early years, beginning in 1965. When we do not know the year, we note it as an "early year". We believe these to be 1966 or 1967. If you can help us establish the correct year, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us at audioarchive@holdenvillage.org.

  • What if I find a broken link or other problem?

We would appreciate reports of broken links or other problems. Please email us at audioarchive@holdenvillage.org with a description of the problem and the page you found it on.

  • Why are there multiple parts?

Recordings digitized prior to 2009 may have multiple tracks. Many of these recordings were digitized from magnetic tape. Some sessions were so long they took more than one tape and these tapes became separate parts. Also, for several years, our Media Ministry volunteers provided an introduction to the session. On these occasions, the introduction is part 1 and the main session begins with part 2.

Our practice now is to combine these tracks as sessions are digitized for our online collection.

  • I would like to help/contribute to this project.

Holden Village pays for the ongoing support of the resource. If you would like to contribute (financially or otherwise) please contact us.

  • Who created this archive?

Many many people contributed to the creation of the Holden Village Audio Archive, including hundreds of summer volunteers. Special appreciation goes to Jerry Johansen of Illinois, who donated many many hours to making this archive a reality. Matt Perry was the initial project lead and developer for the online archive.
