Gene graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D. He continued graduate study at Luther Seminary and was ordained in the ELCA Lutheran Church. He served several churches in Camarillo, California; Waseca; West Concord; Minneapolis; Princeton; and Oakes, North Dakota.
