Fredrik Schiotz graduated from St. Olaf College and earned a masters at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He was elected president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1954. In 1960, with the merger of several church bodies, he was elected president of the newly formed The American Lutheran Church where he served until 1970 when he retired. He was president of the Lutheran World Federation from 1963 to 1970.
He passed away in 1989.
