Tom is currently a research geologist/hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, WA, adjunct professor of geology at Portland State University, and a licensed professional geologist in the State of Washington. He earned his BA at Middlebury College and his Masters and Ph.D. in geology at the University of Washington. Professional work involves him in the study of hazardous eruption-triggered landslides, mudflows, and floods at active volcanoes around the world, and in the education of public officials and at-risk populations about these hazards. Beyond the Cascades, he has worked on projects in Alaska, Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador.
