Carl teaches historical and constructive theology at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. His interests focus on the legacies and challenges of the Lutheran theological tradition and how they relate to struggles for justice in society today. He is currently working on a book on how Luther’s theology of the cross can inform biblical interpretation so that it promotes spiritual growth and social transformation, particularly in matters related to race. Hughes is the author of Kierkegaard and the Staging of Desire: Rhetoric and Performance in a Theology of Eros (Fordham University Press, 2014) and a contributor to Radical Lutherans/Lutheran Radicals, edited by Jason Mahn (Cascade, 2017).
