Once a pastor in Humboldt, South Dakota (and still rostered in that synod), Fred teaches Old Testament at Luther Seminary and frequently finds himself teaching and preaching in congregations here and there on Sunday mornings. Kalamazoo College in Michigan (B.A. in chemistry), Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio (M.Div.), and the University of Heidelberg in Germany (Doctor of Theology in Old Testament) helped pave the path toward parish and teaching (with a brief side trip to try his hand in a pharmaceutical chemistry research lab). He now teaches regularly in Luther’s Doctor of Ministry program in Biblical Preaching and directs the Luther Seminary in Zimbabwe program (on hiatus for obvious and painful reasons). He has also, for some twenty years, been editor of Word & World, the journal of “Theology for Christian Ministry” published at Luther.
