Herb (Herbert W.) Chilstrom was a pastor and professor of religion and academic dean at Luther College, Teaneck, New Jersey. He's a graduate of Augsburg College, Minneapolis and received a bachelor of divinity from Augustana Theological Seminary in 1958. He later received masters and doctorates from Princeton Theological Seminary and New York University, respectively. He was the bishop of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America when he was elected to become the first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
