Joyce is an associate in ministry in the ELCA and has served in the church as a lay professional for over 25 years. She has a MA in Education, with a specialization in curriculum and instruction and is working on doctoral studies for a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems at Fielding Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA.
Starting in 1975, she served as church staff associate in education and youth ministries in a congregation in southeastern Wisconsin for 11 years. From 1990-2002, Joyce served as the Ex. Dir. of Lutheran Human Relations Association. During those years, she worked with many persons of all backgrounds in developing and writing biblically based anti-racism and bridge-building programs. She has led workshops across the U.S. and facilitated anti-racism workshops and facilitator training for the ELCA. In 2003 she served as project coordinator and lead writer of the ELCA resource, “Troubling the Waters for the Healing of the Church: A Journey for White Christians from Privilege to Partnership.” Her passion is to deepen understanding of systems of oppression, to expand the vision of what it means to live as God’s whole people, and to find ways to make that vision real.
Joyce now serves as Director of the Multicultural Urban-Suburban Emerging Youth Leaders (MUSEYL) program of the Nehemiah Project in Milwaukee.
