Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota where he majored in political science. He did his theological training at Union Theological Seminary in New York City where he received a Master of Divinity Degree.
Jack is the author of numerous articles and books on faith, hunger, the arms race and U.S. foreign policy. His books include Hunger for Justice: the Politics of Food and Faith (Orbis Books, 1980). Water: More Precious Than Oil (Augsburg Publishing House, 1982), The Politics of Compassion (Orbis, 1986), War Against the Poor: Low Intensity Conflict and Christian Faith (Orbis, 1989), Brave New World Order: Must We Pledge Allegiance (Orbis Books, 1992), Families Valued: Parenting and Politics for the Good of All Children (Friendship Press, 1996) which examines what we would do differently as parents and as a society if we cared about children. Jack’s most recent book, School of Assassins: The Case for Closing the School of the Americas was published by Orbis Books in the spring of 1997. He is also looking for a publisher for Harvest of Cain, a mystery novel set in El Salvador.
Jack served as National Program Coordinator of the Politics of Food Program with Clergy and Laity Concerned from 1977 to 1981. He directed the Minnesota-based Hunger and Justice Project for the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America including a two year period in which he co-directed a house of studies in Managua, Nicaragua for the Center for Global Education, a program of Augsburg College.
Jack teaches classes on peace studies, hunger and theology at Augsburg College and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He is also a writer, organizer and public speaker based out of Minneapolis where he lives with his wife and three daughter. He is a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and is active in the faith-based Community of St. Martin. Jack also serves on the Advisory Board of the Parenting for Peace and Justice Network.
