In 1968 Mark was a Prince of Peace volunteer in Japan. He taught at the University in Tokyo. Several years later he returned Japan and attended graduate school in Tokyo receiving a master's in Japanese literature. He taught at a Japanese day school in Chicago. He later work for Japan External Trade Organization, an organization created to improve trade of Japanese goods around the world.
