Jan grew up in a Calvinist community, south of Chicago, around truck farmers. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in English, and came to Augustana College where she has been teaching writing and American literature since 1990. She also writes and narrates informal essays on the history of words for a gig that is aired on Augustana's arm of NPR.
