Jason DeRose has been asking people questions and listening for their answers professionally since the sixth grade, when he started writing for the local newspaper in his home town of Venice, Florida. Today, he's the Western Bureau Chief at NPR News, overseeing coverage from Colorado to Hawaii and from Alaska to New Mexico. In between, Jason worked as a reporter, producer, editor, and host at public radio stations in Tampa, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Chicago. He's also been an oral history interviewer at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, a journalism instructor at Northwestern University, and (briefly) a chaplain at a retirement home. Jason majored in religion and English at St. Olaf College and survived a master's degree at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He has a sense of humor. He lives in Santa Monica, California with his husband, Willis, their dog Ajax, and their cat Nestor. Jason is a member at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Santa Monica, where he serves on the congregation council and chairs the seminary internship committee. The best novel he's read so far this year is The Starboard Sea by Amber Dermont, and his favorite interviewer is Fresh Air’s Terry Gross.
