Burrows, Mark S.

Mark Burrows grew up in Wisconsin, did his graduate studies in Tuebingen (Germany) and Princeton, and currently lives and teaches in the Boston area where he has served as Professor of the History of Christianity at Andover Newton Theological School since 1993. He has a strong interest in religion and the arts, and directs the nationally recognized program at his school in Worship, Theology, and the Arts. His research and writings probe the sources of Christian spirituality, with a special focus on mystical and poetic texts. As past president of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, he recently edited a volume entitled Minding the Spirit (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2005), a collection of essays exploring dimensions of Christian spirituality. Mark is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ, representing his church in a variety of national committees, among them as co-chair of the UCC’s full communion partnership with the UEK (Union of Evangelical Churches) and as a delegated member of the Lutheran-Reformed Committee on Theology established after the “Formula of Agreement” accord of 1997.
