Alanis, Javier (Jay)

Javier “Jay” Alanís

I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, about twenty miles from the U.S. – Mexico border. Since my father was from Mexico, I grew up in a bi-lingual and “bi-cultural” family. I am a cultural “mestizo”, a hybrid of Mexican and Texas border culture. As such I can speak “Spanglish” as well as Spanish and English and French. I love to travel and have been around the world. I have led groups to Spain, Greece and Turkey on faith-filled adventures and this summer I took a group to Italy where we had an audience with the Pope himself! How awesome is that!?! We retraced Luther’s steps in Rome and that was really exciting. I love to teach at the Lutheran Seminary Program of the Southwest in Austin where I now serve as the Interim Executive Director. I spent my sabbatical in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I learned to dance tango, Olé! I love spending time in South Padre Island, walking the beach and listening to the sounds of the waves. And of course, I love my mother’s Mexican cooking! It can’t get any better than that!!
