Academic Interests: land use management; relationships between the collective good and private rights; urban planning, revitalization of older urban areas and urban waterfronts; historical geography of the U.S.; contemporary human geographical issues of China, Japan, and the U.S.
Community and Church Involvements: City of Rock Island Planning Commission, land use and waterfront task forces, State of Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council; Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, Illinois; ELCA World Hunger Appeal at local and synodical levels for thirty years; believes church should be more active in advocacy work on social justice and environmental issues.
